The safety of the country’s police officers has become a major topic for discussion in the last few days, following the attack of a bullion van carrying cash by some heavily armed robbers that resulted in the death of one officer and a civilian. According to the Minister of Interior the Ghana Police Service (GPS) currently have 5000 bulletproof vests for the over 40,000 officers currently.

However, the Minister of Interior have noted that, the 5000 bulletproof vests are inadequate for the police population of the country, He added that, steps have been taken to secure a number of bulletproof vests and helmets in addition to the already existing ones.

Meanwhile, in relation to this, Apostle Thomas kusi Appiah, a security expert has said that the type of bulletproof provided for the Ghana police service is archaic to be used by the security service as they are way heavier compared to other modernized ones used in other countries.

He again added that individuals in the police service even go as far as exchange reflectors for duties since they are limited.
