Semester system in JHS: Are Teachers of JHS going to work more days than their counterparts in primary and kindergarten?

Many Junior High School (JHS) Teachers have raised concerns to an extent where some are asking the Ministry of Education (MOE) and Ghana Education Service (GES) to consider an incentive package as it was the case in Senior High School (SHS). Now, the question is, is the assertion really true? And if it’s true, how many extra days are we talking about?

LET’S GET INTO THE MATHEMATICS.

PRIMARY SCHOOL:

  1. FIRST TERM VACATION: 17th April to 3rd May, 2021 = 16 days
  2. SECOND TERM VACATION: 7th August to 5th September, 2021 = 30 days
  3. THIRD TERM VACATION: 11th DECEMBER to 18th JANUARY 2022 = 39 days

(Taking that to be the new start of the academic year)

Putting all together thus 16+30+39=85 days of vacation.

Comparing the two, it’s obvious there’s no much difference to make a big deal of. Both Junior High School (JHS) and Senior High School (SHS) have Forty-two (42) contact weeks. However, another concern raised is that, does the semester calendar allow for Teachers who want to pursue further studies via sandwich mode? We shall look into that as well. But before then, Tell us what you think.
