Officials from the Ghana Food and Drugs Authority are currently assisting the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to produce 15,000 bottles of hand sanitizers in an attempt to curb the Corona Virus pandemic in the country. The production started 1st April 2020 at the forecourt of the Ministry and is expected to end on Friday 3rd April 2020.

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Cynthia Mamle Morrison said aside from the distribution of hand sanitizers to the vulnerable in society, her Ministry will train Kayayes on personal hygiene, educate them on the importance of the usage of hand sanitizers and the need for social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

She added that her Ministry will, in addition, provide Veronica buckets for handwashing as part of their personal hygiene within this period.

The Chief Director for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Afisah Zakariah said the hand sanitizers will be distributed to the vulnerable within the affected areas during the two weeks lockdown period. She also mentioned that the Ministry paid several visits to the Kakayes at their various locations within the affected areas to ascertain how they are faring during the lockdown.

She mentioned that the Ministry is also putting in place measures to provide meals, water and toiletries to Kayayes within the affected areas during this period.

Dr. Afisah Zakariah also added that the government has made provision of suitable places for some homeless Kakayes to be accommodated within this period. She, therefore, called on all to come on board to support the government to intensify the education on the Corona Virus and also help fight the disease in order to save lives.

The officers from GFDA currently assisting in the preparation of the hand-sanitizers are Mr. Alhassan Ibrahim Baba, Madam Amdia Mahamadu and Mr. Anning Bartholomew Boateng.
