The Okaikwei North municipal assembly has carried out a demolishing exercise to clear
unauthorised and illegal structures erected along the Achimota Overhead railways.
The exercise, which commenced at about 8 am on Tuesday saw the assembly’s task force
using a bulldozer to clear the structures while police personnel provided security.
Illegal wooden structures stretching from the Achimota old station near the railway, some
serving as residential accommodation, garages, vulcanising shops, were brought down by the task force.
The personal assistant to the municipal chief executive of the okaikwei north municipality, Mr Rexford
Frimpong told peace news that adequate notice was given to the affected people contrary to the assertion
by the displaced persons that they were not notified.
According to him, the squatters have turned the place to a tramadol business centre and they have also
encouraged on the railway line which is affecting the railway business in the country and they want
to maintain the place for development.
Mr Rexford Frimpong says the Achimota Railway line has a number of shops lined up on the railway
with some squatters living in the uncompleted buildings on the stretch.
He, therefore, advised the residents in the Municipality to seek permission from the Assembly before purchasing
land to do a project.
